Photographers have goofy little tricks to get toddlers to look at the camera. One of mine is pretending there’s something silly or interesting behind my back, which usually gets the toddler to look in the general direction of my camera and voila! Family photo gold.
This little guy, let me tell you. He might be the most Minnesotan toddler that ever lived.
Me [in babyish voice]: “Hey buddy, do you see a birdie behind me?!”
Him [totally serious]: “No, but there is a pontoon.”
Also, five minutes later.
Me [again, in babyish voice]: “Oh gosh what do you think that sound is bud, a birdie?”
Him [again, in deadpan voice]: “It’s a loon.”
At this point I realize I’m dealing with a real professional and just cut the baby talk. He, sensing that he’s being treated like the adult he is, cooperates beautifully and smiles nice and big for the camera. Even gives his baby brother a kiss that doesn’t involve a choke hold or slobber, which is BIG in terms of toddler to baby kisses at family photography sessions.
Moral of the story? Minnesota toddlers are the best, bar none.
Oh and the gorgeous mom and dad, plus cute baby brother, and lovely Minnesota summer evening on the lake aren’t too shabby either <3

This family drove all the way up from Rochester, MN to the Stone Arch Bridge Area of downtown Minneapolis for their family session and I can’t even put into words how lovely they were. Their daughter may have been shy at first – classic one year old stuff – but she was giggling and walking up a storm by the end. I feel like her fabulous shoes had something to do with it. A shoe girl is a girl after my own heart!
I love when clients drive in from Rochester, Red Wing, Duluth or even Bemidji for their family photographs; I know they are trusting me with their most precious time and investment and I am forever humbled because of it.
This little love is already one, even though I’m 99% sure her newborn session was just last week… but I suppose that can’t be true, can it? All of her sleepy newborn goodness has been replaced with sass and smiles and lots of giggles for her puppy. Adorable, right?
Her momma and dad chose one of my favorite locations in Minneapolis: the Stone Arch Bridge area of downtown. It’s a perfect mix of green and trees with both classic and modern architecture and perfect cityscapes. Add in a sunny evening and you’ve got a recipe for family session awesomeness.

This dad was a wise, wise man. Instead of getting his lovely wife the usual flowers or chocolate for Mother’s Day, he got her something priceless: family photos to last a lifetime. We met at the Stone Arch Bridge Area of Downtown Minneapolis and had a ball playing, giggling, giving mom slobbery kisses (the baby, not me!) and capturing this time in the life of their perfect little family of 3. You couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend Mother’s Day.
I know it sounds cliche but these days turn into weeks and the weeks to months and the months to years and before you know it you look back and wonder where your little baby went. Don’t forget to capture the most perfect gift you’ll ever have.
